HDPE - why it is the standard for capsule bottles

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is the most widely specified polymer for pharmaceutical and supplement capsule packaging for three reasons: its exceptionally low water vapour transmission rate (WVTR ≤ 0.5 g/m²/day at 38°C/90% RH) protects moisture-sensitive capsules from humidity during storage and distribution; its chemical resistance prevents interaction with gelatin or HPMC capsule shells; and its opaque white appearance blocks UV light that degrades heat- and light-sensitive active ingredients.

product-1080-463

PET clear - when visibility matters

The PET (polyethylene terephthalate) clear option allows complete product visibility - the capsule content, fill level, and capsule colour are visible through the bottle wall. PET has a slightly higher WVTR than HDPE but remains appropriate for standard-humidity storage conditions. Clear PET is preferred for premium supplement brands where visual product presentation on retail shelf is a key commercial differentiator, and for products where capsule colour-coding (dose identification) benefits from consumer visibility.

Everything You Need to Know

Moisture is the primary degradation pathway for gelatin and HPMC capsules - a single percent increase in capsule shell moisture content can cause sticking, softening, or brittleness. Our bottles are designed with multiple, complementary moisture barriers to protect capsule integrity from filling line to consumer.

HDPE

HDPE bottle wall

Primary moisture barrier · continuous

The HDPE bottle wall is the primary continuous moisture barrier. HDPE's crystalline polymer structure provides a highly tortuous path for water vapour molecules - dramatically slowing moisture ingress compared to PET or PP. The WVTR of the bottle wall is the single most important moisture protection factor for the stored capsules.

WVTR ≤ 0.5 g/m²/day at 38°C/90% RH

Tested to USP <661> container performance

White HDPE also blocks UV light degradation

Al foil

Induction seal liner

Hermetic airtight seal at opening

The induction seal liner is an aluminium foil / foam / polymer laminate heat-sealed across the bottle mouth by an electromagnetic induction machine at the filling stage. When sealed, it creates a hermetic, airtight barrier across the bottle opening - zero moisture passage at the neck interface until the consumer removes it. This is the highest-priority seal point because the threaded cap interface alone allows significant vapour exchange.

Hermetic seal - zero moisture at neck interface

Consumer tamper evidence - foil must be broken

Applied by induction sealer at filling stage

CR cap

Cap gasket / liner

Thread interface seal · reduces gap moisture

The child-resistant cap includes a PE foam or PE liner inside the cap body that compresses against the bottle rim when fully tightened - creating a secondary vapour seal at the thread interface. While not hermetic, this liner significantly reduces the air exchange at the cap-bottle thread junction compared to an unlined cap.

PE foam liner in cap reduces rim vapour exchange

Consistent compression across full 360° rim

Second barrier layer after induction seal removed

Silica

Desiccant sachet

Active moisture absorption inside the bottle

A silica gel desiccant sachet placed inside the bottle at filling actively absorbs any residual moisture within the bottle headspace and any slow moisture ingress through the bottle wall or cap interface. Desiccants extend the effective moisture protection of the bottle system, particularly during distribution in humid climates (tropical, maritime, monsoon regions).

Silica gel sachet - 1g or 2g depending on bottle size

Absorbs residual headspace moisture at filling

Protects against moisture ingress in humid climates

INDUCTION SEAL LINER

The seal inside the cap - airtight from filling to consumer

The induction seal is the most effective tamper-evidence and moisture-protection feature of the capsule bottle system - it is a hermetic aluminium foil membrane heat-sealed across the bottle mouth, visible only when the cap is first removed

product-792-792

Aluminium foil induction seal

Heat-sealed · hermetic · tamper-evident

The induction seal is a multi-layer laminate - typically aluminium foil / heat-seal polymer / foam backing - applied as a pre-cut disc on the bottle mouth inside the cap. At the filling stage, an induction sealer passes an electromagnetic field through the cap without contact, inducing heat in the aluminium foil layer and melting the heat-seal polymer to the bottle rim. The result is an airtight hermetic seal that the consumer must tear to access the contents - providing both maximum moisture protection and clear tamper evidence.

Hermetic aluminium foil seal - zero moisture at neck

Consumer tamper evidence - foil visually intact or torn

Applied by standard induction sealing equipment

Foil + foam laminate: easy peel for consumer

Extends shelf life by preventing headspace moisture exchange

Standard cap only (no induction seal)

Cap + PE foam gasket · lower cost

The standard configuration without induction seal still provides meaningful moisture protection through the HDPE bottle wall and the PE foam gasket inside the CR cap. This configuration is appropriate for products with low moisture sensitivity, short distribution lead times, or ambient humidity storage conditions - where the cost and equipment requirement of induction sealing is not justified by the moisture risk profile of the product. The PE foam liner in the cap compresses against the bottle rim to reduce vapour exchange at the thread interface.

Lower cost - no induction sealing equipment needed

PE foam liner in cap provides secondary rim seal

 Suitable for low-humidity storage conditions

 Appropriate for short shelf-life products

product-786-786

Which configuration to specify

For products distributed in tropical, monsoon, or high-humidity climates, or products with a gelatin capsule shell that is inherently moisture-sensitive - specify the induction seal configuration. For low-humidity ambient storage (air-conditioned warehouse, temperate climate) with short shelf life - the standard cap-only configuration is adequate. If uncertain, the induction seal adds minimal cost per unit and eliminates moisture risk entirely.

SIZE OPTIONS

50g or 100g - choose by dose and count

The two sizes cover the most common capsule product formats from a single-month supply of 60 standard capsules to a bulk value-size of 120–180 capsules

product-792-792

50g compact bottle

The 50g bottle holds approximately 60–90 standard size 0 or size 1 capsules - a one-month supply at 2 capsules per day. The compact format is efficient for shelf space at retail, easy for consumers to handle, and the right size for trial or introductory packs. Popular for premium supplement brands where smaller package size signals premium quality.

 ~60–90 standard capsules (size 0/1)

 1-month supply at standard dosing

Trial · introductory · premium small pack

Compact - fits pharmacy shelf bay efficiently

100g value bottle

The 100g bottle holds approximately 120–180 capsules - a two-to-three month supply. The larger format provides a lower cost per capsule for the consumer, a higher per-unit margin for the brand, and greater shipping efficiency per capsule. The standard bulk supplement size at retail in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

 ~120–180 capsules (size 0/1)

2–3 month supply - bulk value format

Lower per-capsule cost · higher brand margin

Dominant retail supplement size globally

Child-resistant packaging is a regulatory requirement for pharmaceutical products and recommended best practice for supplement products containing ingredients that could cause harm if consumed in large quantities by a child. Our CR caps meet international certification standards.

Push-down-turn mechanism

How child resistance is achieved

The push-down-turn (PDT) cap requires the user to simultaneously apply downward pressure on the cap while rotating it to open. This two-motion combination requires the hand strength and motor coordination of an adult - reliably preventing children under 5 from opening the bottle through standard turning or pulling actions alone. A tab on the inside of the cap engages a locking ramp on the bottle neck, which is disengaged only under downward pressure.

Two simultaneous motions required: press + turn

Locking tab disengages only under downward force

International CR standards

ISO 8317 · 16 CFR 1700.20 · EN 28317

Child-resistant packaging certifications are market-specific regulatory requirements. Our CR caps are tested to ISO 8317 (international), 16 CFR 1700.20 (US PPPA - Poison Prevention Packaging Act), and EN 28317 (European standard). Each standard requires a child panel test (children aged 42–51 months) with a maximum opening success rate, and a senior adult panel test confirming accessibility for adults aged 50–70.

 ISO 8317: international child-resistant standard

 16 CFR 1700.20: US market (FDA/CPSC requirement)

EN 28317: European CE market requirement

Child panel test: ≤ 20% open success by children

Adult accessibility: ≥ 90% success by adults 50–70

Senior-friendly option available

Non-CR standard screw cap

For products aimed at elderly patients or where the buyer's regulatory review confirms CR packaging is not legally required, a standard non-CR screw cap with PE foam liner is available as an alternative. The non-CR cap provides the same moisture protection (PE foam gasket) without the push-down-turn mechanism. Specify at order stage based on your regulatory obligation and target consumer profile.

Standard screw cap - no CR mechanism

Same PE foam moisture gasket

Suitable for elderly-targeted or non-CR-required products

HDPE recyclability

Resin code #2 · widely accepted

HDPE resin code #2 is the second most widely recycled plastic globally - accepted by the vast majority of municipal recycling programmes in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. The all-HDPE bottle and cap (cap in matching HDPE or PP) can be recycled together in the same stream. For brands with sustainability commitments, we can supply bottles with post-consumer recycled (PCR) HDPE content on production orders.
