A medical-grade 20 mm blue aluminium pharmaceutical seal available in two opening types (full tear-off and flip-off Al-PP) and two inner coating options (plain aluminium and epoxy resin). Blue colour is applied as an epoxy lacquer to the outer aluminium surface. 0.25 mm EN AW-1050A substrate, compatible with all standard 20 mm pharmaceutical crimping equipment.

Blue colour - epoxy lacquer outer, not paint
The blue colour is an epoxy-based lacquer applied by roller coating to the aluminium sheet surface before pressing - not paint or ink applied after pressing. Roller-coated epoxy provides a uniform, consistent colour across the full disc without edge-thinning or colour variation at the cap radius. Pencil hardness ≥ 2H, salt spray resistance ≥ 200h (ISO 9227). The blue hue matches Pantone 286C as standard; custom Pantone colours are available on production orders.
Full tear vs flip-off - structural difference
The full tear-off seal is a single aluminium disc - there is no PP component. The entire cap is aluminium, including the portion that is removed when opened. The disc tears away completely, leaving only the crimped skirt on the vial neck. The flip-off cap has a two-layer construction: an outer aluminium disc and an inner PP layer. The PP layer remains on the vial neck after the aluminium flip tab is opened, providing a second barrier before stopper access. Each type has specific clinical and packaging advantages - see the Opening Method section below.

Understanding the structural and functional difference between the two opening types is essential for choosing the right seal for your application. The opening method determines what happens to the cap at the point of vial access - and whether any material remains on the vial neck after opening.

Aluminium outer + PP inner · two-layer
01 Sealed state: Blue aluminium outer disc sits over the PP inner layer. Both layers are visible from above - Al disc on top, PP layer beneath it.
02 Lift the tab: A small aluminium flip tab on the edge of the outer disc is lifted upward - pivoting on its hinge point.
03 Fold back Al disc: The aluminium disc folds back and away from the vial, separating from the PP inner layer. The PP layer remains seated on the vial neck, still covering the stopper.
04 Access stopper: The PP inner layer remains on the neck - stopper access is via the central opening. The PP layer stays as a secondary visible seal indicator.

Full Tear-Off Seal
Pure aluminium · single layer · complete removal
01 Sealed state: Single blue aluminium disc covering the stopper. No PP layer - the entire cap is aluminium. Score line is pressed into the disc above the crimp skirt.
02 Lift pull ring: A pull ring tab (part of the same Al sheet) is lifted upward. The ring is the same aluminium as the disc - it is not a separate component.
03 Score tears circumferentially: As the ring is pulled upward, the score line tears in a controlled ring pattern around the full circumference of the cap. The disc separates completely.
04 Disc removed - stopper directly exposed: The entire aluminium disc is absent from the vial neck. Only the crimped skirt remains. The stopper is directly accessible with no PP layer remaining.

Plain aluminium vs epoxy resin inner
The inner surface of the aluminium cap is the surface that contacts the vial stopper and faces the drug product headspace. The inner coating specification matters for drug product compatibility, metal migration, and regulatory extractables/leachables assessment.

The standard pharmaceutical-grade aluminium cap inner surface - the aluminium substrate is left uncoated on the inner face, exposing the bare EN AW-1050A aluminium to the vial stopper and headspace. This is the most widely used specification globally and is appropriate for the vast majority of pharmaceutical and cosmetic injectable applications.

An epoxy resin layer (8–12 μm DFT) is applied to the inner face of the aluminium cap, placing a polymer barrier between the metal substrate and the vial stopper / headspace. The epoxy inner is specified for applications where minimising metal contact with the drug headspace is required - particularly for biological products, pH-sensitive preparations, and products undergoing extractables/leachables assessment.

Biological drug products, vaccines, pH < 4 or pH > 9 preparations, lyophilized products with highly reactive active substances, or products undergoing formal extractables/leachables assessment. The epoxy barrier reduces the Al migration pathway and simplifies the ICH Q3D elemental impurity dossier.
Flip-off + plain Al inner
The globally dominant pharmaceutical vial seal specification. Used for the majority of parenteral drugs worldwide - injectable antibiotics, vaccines, growth hormones, and specialty injectables. If you are unsure which specification to choose, this is the starting point.
Full tear + epoxy inner
Premium lyophilized products, biologics requiring unobstructed stopper access, and drug products where both complete disc removal and minimum metal contact are specified. Colour consistency across lots - epoxy lacquer specification
Blue and all other standard colours are produced from a defined epoxy lacquer formulation applied at 8–12 μm DFT. Lot-to-lot colour consistency is maintained by controlling lacquer viscosity, coating weight, and cure parameters. For medical device and pharmaceutical packaging requiring colour-coded vial identity (e.g. dose strength differentiation), a colour match standard is agreed at sample approval stage and referenced against the production lot CoA.
